Miyuki Beach|An unusual beach located under elevated highway near Hakone

Miyukinohama Beach is a beach located in Odawara, Kanagawa Prefecture. It is an unusual beach that is entered under the elevated railway tracks of the Seisho Bypass.

Odawara was once a prosperous lodging town during the Edo period (1603-1867), when the Hojo family rose to power in the Kanto region from its base at Odawara Castle.

Today it seems more like a transit point for Hakone trips. Recently, Odawara is trying to revive its liveliness as a castle town by opening a new commercial facility in front of the station.

Let’s take a look at the highlights of Miyuki no Hama.

What makes Miyuki Beach attractive?

The highlight of Miyuki no Hama lies in the contrast of light and shadow.

You may be thinking, “How dare I introduce something completely unrelated to the beach when I am writing about a beach?”
But please understand that this is something I thought during my visiting several times.

Now, as you can see through your eyes, the contrast between shadow and light is vivid when you look through the shutter.

The stronger the shadow, the more the light is emphasized, even in ordinary, everyday life.

My photographic skills are not great, but I hope you can understand what I am trying to say.
I looked back at the photos and thought for a moment, or not, that the weaker something is, the brighter the other parts of the image may be.

The beach is right in front of Sagami Bay, so on many days the waves are high and snorkeling is a dream come true, but it is a perfect beach for reading a good book in the shade with a beer.

Restaurants and Resting Places

Odawara is famous for its oden, fish cakes, and seafood. There are a variety of restaurants around the station, so there is no problem in deciding what to eat or drink while walking around.

There is a restroom near the entrance to Mihama-no-hama, but it is not very clean, so we recommend that you look for it beforehand.

Nearby Sightseeing Spots

Odawara Castle is famous and climbing up to the castle is a good souvenir, but it is beautiful enough just to look up from the surroundings.

The area leading up to the meeting where you climb up to the castle tower is a park, so you can take your time to admire the castle.

Minaka Odawara, which has been the talk of the town recently, is a commercial facility consisting of 14 floors above ground plus one basement floor.
On the 1st and 2nd floors, you will find a variety of restaurants and cafes, many of which are well-known Odawara restaurants.

Access

Odawara is accessible from Tokyo Station by the Tokaido Shinkansen (approx. 30 min.) or the Ueno Tokyo Line (approx. 85 min.), and from Shinjuku Station by the Odakyu or Shonan Shinjuku Line (approx. 70 min.).

It is about 1.2 km from the station to Miyukinohama. You may not feel it is too far, as you can walk along the shopping street and see historic buildings along the way.

If you take the bus, the nearest bus stop is “Miyuki no Hama.
